A Bit Disappointing
RedbirdCraig1 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
At the start of the episode I was a bit excited because Dan O'Herlihy is usually a very interesting actor so I looked forward to his strategic battle with McGarrett. Unfortunately we didn't get a lot of that interaction except for a couple of scenes.

There was a bit of intrigue with Dansby's fake death (which I never quite understood how McGarrett sniffed out so quickly- it was almost immediate that he saw it as a fake) and figuring out exactly what each player in the game was trying to accomplish. However, it was "muddled" as my friend Plankton called it and not as interesting as I'd hoped.

Also, these guys are spies. Don't they notice that there's almost always a chopper about 200 feet above them? Not to mention guys in suits in a tropical climate who just happen to be walking around 50-100 feet behind them in fairly quiet areas? Chin and Duke don't exactly blend in as tourists with their sports jackets.

This one just seemed a bit muddled and dumb....

Warning: Spoilers
Aside from having two incredibly erudite and sophisticated gentlemen as guest stars (Murray Matheson and Dan O'Herlihy), I felt this episode was a bit of a disappointment. The biggest problem is that the plot seemed a bit muddled and McGarrett's actions seemed a bit strange.

The show begins with a British lord (Matheson) and his wife (Juliet Mills) arriving in Hawaii. Soon after, Matheson fakes his own death. It turns out he's wanted by British Intelligence because he's apparently stolen some secrets and plans on selling them to the Chinese. Another agent (O'Herlihy) arrives and is trying to track down Matheson--and repeatedly O'Herlihy deliberately sabotages McGarrett's investigation--not just of the faked suicide but a murder related to this. This is where the show makes little sense. Although McGarrett has been urged by the State Department to assist British Intelligence, O'Herlihy repeatedly obstructs justice and SHOULD have been arrested on several occasions. But, McGarrett does nothing...until the ending where O'Herlihy cannot help but get arrested! It all seemed a bit sloppy and meddled to me.

Opinions on this episode vary widely

Opinions on this episode vary widely LOL. But that's the result when different people have different tastes and different abilities to follow a story of this pace. This one isn't for the action junkie, despite the second recent boat chase down the Kapalama Canal.

The story is spy versus spy with at least two interesting twists and another case where another interested investigator has objectives of his own, and they don't match McGarrett's.

While I disagree with some other fans about the writing and entertainment value of the episode, I will agree that they utterly wasted the casting of Juliet Mills. And both British actors seemed curiously elderly for the roles. Matheson was 63 and O'Herlihy 56, but both men looked 80 and not a day younger. LOL

But McGarrett's scenes with Dan O'Herlihy were impressive, with the attitude Jack Lord frequently brought to his role.

Kind of dull

Also, an error in spelling. When we saw the document in the final scene, it said OHMS. So if it was a document from the UK one of the words should have been spelled defence.

Some fine British actors were wasted on this dull story. The plot went all over the place and nowhere at the same time.

Juliet Mills had almost nothing to do. She can act and should've been put to better use rather than just a pretty middle-aged actress. Anyone could've been cast in that role.
