Punishing D. J.
mitchrmp9 December 2013
Danny is leaving for his first overnight trip since Pam dies. He leaves lots of instructions with Joey and Jesse and expects the girls to be good. Since Jesse and Joey are still pretty green at parenting, D. J. feels she can get away with ditching school to go get a signed autograph. After all, Kimmie is skipping! Her dad tells her no, but she comes up with a plan.

Instead of punishing her, the boys tell her how disappointed in her but don't want Danny to know about this since he won't trust them anymore. Stephanie comes home and blabs the whole thing and not only gets D. J. into trouble (though I never saw her punished, just 'talked' to), but also got the boys into trouble.

I've noticed that Danny does a lot of lecturing but not a lot of punishment. The kids turned out great like this, but I still thing taking away privileges should have happened in several cases.

The One Where D.J. Skips School...
taylorkingston3 May 2015
Warning: Spoilers
I really like this episode. I think it's a great first Season Finale, and it has a really good storyline to it.

In this episode, D.J. really wants an autograph from a celebrity who will be at the mall during a school day. She asks her Dad and Joey and Jesse, if she can go, but they all say no, understandably. She decides that it's not fair, so she skips school with Kimmy and goes anyway. Since Danny felt bad, he decided to go down to the mall and get the autograph for her, very sweet, I might add. But when he's there and Michelle wanders off and finds D.J., she gets in a lot of trouble.

Overall, I give this episode an 8 out of 10, which in my ratings book is: Great.

Unrealistic, But All-Around Fun.
Movie-ManDan1 April 2016
Warning: Spoilers
This episode involves DJ skipping school to get Stacey Q's autograph at the mall. I honestly wonder how many kids tried DJ's scheme after watching this episode. If I lived close to school and if my parents didn't watch it with me, I probably would have tried it. But it is not just the skipping that makes this episode good.

Danny is gone for work for just over a day, so DJ thinks she can easily fool Joey and Jesse. She lies about a school project to Jesse, which leads him to tell her about how he faked- out his parents: he wanted to see a Rolling Stones farewell concert during school hours (which is unrealistic) and made himself out to be very sick. His parents call the school, but ten minutes later, he comes out of it and is sent to school--without the school expecting him. DJ uses the scheme on Joey while Jesse is at work, and her and Kimmy hit the mall. All is well until Joey shows up with Michelle ready to get an autograph for DJ. Uh-oh!

DJ doing the scheming is hilarious because they all initially fall for it. The entire mall scene is hilarious too. I also enjoy when Joey and Jesse alone play parent. I don't know why, I just do. But my favourite part is Jesse trying to finish writing a song but failing. I laugh so hard at that bit every time.

The only unrealistic part is when DJ confesses to Danny and Danny punishes her. if that were my dad, my rear end would bloody and I would be kept in a freaking bomb shelter. But this is a family sitcom, so nothing that bad can happen.

Season 1: A Good Start
FriedToast0222 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
I really enjoy season 1 for what it is, it feels quite raw, and probably feels the most realistic and grounded of all seasons. With this season having the most focus on Pam who died in a car accident (later on we realize from a drunk driver). With episodes like the "Our Very first Show, and The Miracle of Thanksgiving" having great performances by the actors. This show has always done a good job at handling more serious topics and balancing comedy well. I love the gag only in season one of Joey (Dave Coulier) mirroring the mannequin clothes in the alcove. We have some of my favorite episodes in this season, like "The Big Three 0", "The Miracle of Thanksgiving", "Joeys Place", and "Our Very First show". The beginning of this season is really strong with the first three episodes being some of my favorites.

This season does have some weaker episodes like "Sea Cruise", "The return of Grandma", "But Seriousply Folks", "Half a love story", and "Jesse's girl" I wouldn't say any of them are bad, because I never skip them (except sometimes "But Seriously Folks"), but there's some parts in them that I notice that either don't fit the character and our experiencing with different ideas. Honestly I like idea of "Sea Cruise" with just a guys episode, but it's just kind of slow for me. Also the house doesn't feel full yet I know there is already 6 living there which is quite a lot, but we don't have aunt Becky, Comet, Nicky and Alex, and Steve and Kimmy feel like they live at the house in the later seasons. Kimmy only has three episode appearances in season 1, which is crazy I did not realize that until I did the math (4 including a spoken mention in the pilot). Overall raw season and good start. Wish more seasons explored Pam's character more. There's only a couple of more heavily featuring her.

Rough Rating- 81% B-

This episode "Dj Tanners Day off" is above average for me, it's fun. I always love this side of Joey and miss it, wish we saw more of it. That's why "Joey Gets Tough" is one of my favorites.
