I am not a lawyer, nor have I played one on TV! But this case of "The F.B.I." is a perplexing one, as I have no idea if the story involves extortion (threatening to harm someone unless they do something or give you something) or blackmail (threatening to tell what illegal or immoral acts a person has done unless they do something or give you something).
The story begins with a man being convicted of a murder. And, like so many murder cases, the guy is adamant that he is innocent. So the convicted man's brother concocts a nutty scheme...to go to the man he thinks MIGHT be the real murderer and threaten him. He sends an anonymous letter telling the possible killer that he saw him kill the woman and he'll tell the police unless he's given $50,000.
Well, the letter is intercepted by the possible murderer's wife (Laraine Day) and she contacts the FBI. Erskine arrives shortly after her husband arrives home...and the man behaves oddly for an innocent man. Of course, it's Erskine's job to figure out who sent the letter. But there is so much more to this story...I think you should just see it yourself.
This is an exciting episode and I am very glad I watched it. It has a lot of tension and is highly original. I just cannot figure out if it's extortion or blackmail....
