An odd script, that's for sure.

Rob has a friend who is making a movie. This friend wants Rob to be a script doctor and improve his script and in exchange, he'll let Rob star in it. At first, this isn't an issue, as although it's a romance, the 'woman' he'll be acting against in the film will be played by the camera. As a result, the usually jealous Laura doesn't have a problem with Rob being in the film. But when the director changes his wind and gets a gorgeous Italian woman to co-star with Rob, this creates problems--not just for Laura but for Rob as well. So, to try to get past this, Rob sends Laura home and filming resumes. Is the film a success? And, can Laura handle this change in the movie?

The episode has a few laughs. But the script is a problem because it didn't make a lot of sense. Why would they have Rob star in such a film considering he has no experience? And, doesn't all this seem out of character for Rob?? As a result, it's a very weak episode...watchable but a disappointment.

YOU'RE THE STAR IN MY CHEAP MOVIE!
tcchelsey21 January 2024
Just plain stilly stuff from the final season. Rob, the professional writer, is asked by an old pal to make changes to his movie script. Instead of getting money --he'll get to star in it! Not really that far from the truth, especially when it comes to low budget films, not to forget the ever resourceful Hollywood pioneer, Ed Wood.

To stir it all up even more, Laura gets to visit the set -- while Rob has to do a love scene with beautiful Italian actress Lucianno Mazetta, a take-off on Gina Lollobrigida, no doubt. Laura isn't impressed and there's fireworks! The awkward kissing scene between Rob and the Italian bombshell is tv history.

Popular actor Michael Constantine as Merkle is a hoot. Written so well by Jack Winter, who later wrote for such shows as the ODD COUPLE and LOVE, AMERICAN STYLE. Jack also made historical news as it was later revealed his fellow classmate at Harvard was noneother than the Unibomber, Ted Kaczynski. An amazing fact.

Watch this for one goofy performance by Dick Van Dyke. SEASON 5 EPISODE 28 remastered dvd box set.

poor Rob

Warning: Spoilers
This is the only episode from the 5th season that didn't click for me. There was something off about making Rob a doofus. Dick Van dyke was great at physical comedy; his tripping and other physical works had a grace to them, like Chaplin. But in this episode, he's made to look like an incompetent actor and it just isn't funny.

Rob's weakness is not a good look...

Warning: Spoilers
In this episode Mary is at her jealous and neurotic mode here yet again and Rob hasn't got the guts to set her straight...again.

Rob lands a simple part in a short tv skit that involves him kissing a "beautiful Italian actress" (she is certainly nothing special and nowhere near "beautiful") Naturally,Mary acts as if Rob is committing a federal crime by giving this average-looking woman an on-screen kiss. Mary insists on being present on the set for the filming. Rob is dumb enough and weak enough to go along with having Mary on the set which can only cause problems and headaches.

If only Rob would just once find the nerve to speak plainly to Mary and set her straight when she is being a worrisome nag and a general pain in the rear, it would make the show more enjoyable and realistic.

Rob is a weak man,and it's not a good-look.
