Another first-rate comedy...

..that somehow fails to please the IMDB ratings crowd.

7.6?? Is that ALL?? "Draw Me a Pear" exemplifies what makes the van Dyke show great: sharp, witty writing, deft, perfectly timed and nuanced performances, and brisk, breezy direction.

But tired, trite stuff like "Ghost of A Chantz" seems to be what most IMDB users are looking for...the same stuff you can find in ANY other comedy series. "Pear" is the sort of show that makes van Dyke uniquely funny and defines it as a true classic. LR

Jealousy, once again, rears its ugly head.

I have recently rewatched "The Dick Van Dyke Show" from start to finish (I have seven more episodes to go) and one thing I really dislike about the show is just how jealous and insecure Rob and Laura (especially Laura) are. For a healthy marriage, it's not very healthy and I am surprised how often the writers used this as a plot device. And, generally, these are the weakest episodes of "The Dick Van Dyke Show".

Laura wants Rob to take an art class with her. He doesn't want to do this but does it to please her. However, when Rob becomes the teacher's pet and gets a lot of attention from her, Laura becomes VERY jealous. Later, when Rob talks about discontinuing the classes since it's obvious Laura is unhappy, she insists he continue. And, when he agrees, she yells at him for not stopping! No matter what, Rob can't seem to win.

It's odd that Laura never mentioned the class she took quite a few episodes earlier. This is because she took a creative writing class and her teacher was VERY inappropriate and made a clumsy pass at her. Mentioning this might have made "Draw Me a Pear" make a LOT more sense. Otherwise, it just seems like one of about 6-8 other episodes where Laura got incredibly jealous. Overall, I'd give this one a 6....mostly because it feels like a case of 'been there, done that'....and the jealousy angle isn't all that funny.
