The Larkin clan have always been by and large an honest family, Pop is something of a wheeler dealer in his business endeavours, but he would never cheat or do anyone down.

So when 'fate' seems to drop in their laps Charlie feels, that he has to be Cedric Charlton Late of Her Majesty's, Inland Revenue to remind them of their duties.

Young Monty Larkin is away from home as a navel cadet at HMS Davenport a shore based establishment at Chatham, unfortunately he has been undergoing some bullying from one of the instructors a Petty Officer Strickland.

Ma and Pa Larkin go to the Open Day at HMS Davenport, along with the Brigadier who is an old army colleague of the camps Commanding Officer Basil Shande.

This episode effectively sees the last of young Monty, as he gets his "navel Ticket around the Horne to Australia"

Marcus Cope is not content with straightforward business approaches, and he is not averse to using any means at his his disposal, including hiring muscle from 'ton ups' to put the wind up Mrs Kinthley.

Cope is also inordinately interested in the Larkin windfall for an allegedly disinterested observer, and he uses these hooligans to trace before the old bill manage to track it down.

Life in the environs of home farm never normally appears to extend far beyond the surrounding villages in the Kent countryside, and this is an essential aspect of the shows enduring charm.

Darling Buds of May is set in the 1950's, a time of the 'Cold War' between the USA and Russia, Britain has become roped in alongside the yanks.

But there is a strong popular opposition to nuclear armaments, in the shape of CND the Campaign for Nuclear Disarament, and the Charlton's Marriette and Charley are committed members.

Pop Larkin isn't best pleased when they take their family on a CND March, but that is as of nowt when Ma decides to join them, and they become part of the local Kent contingent.
