Solid, Engaging Episode

Warning: Spoilers
"Death Chain" is a solid entry into the Cannon series. The episode starts with a young woman getting run down and killed. Her boss (William Windom), who was with her on the night the killer knocked on her door, hires Cannon to investigate the death. Windom, it seems, was having an affair with the young woman, and he bypasses the police in the hopes of having the crime solved while concealing the indiscretion from his civic-minded wife. We find out the woman was killed because she was part of a heist, and her death is one in a series of events in which the principals try and one-up each other to gain all of the money. Cannon must piece the evidence together to solve the case.

One of the absolute joys of watching Cannon today is seeing some of the truly outstanding character actors of the times who cycled through dozens of shows of the time period. This show alone features William Windom, Don Gordon, and Sorrell Booke- three super actors whose presence helps make the show. Windom does a nice job of playing his character as a seemingly decent guy who tries to atone for his adultery by avenging his mistress' death. Don Gordon has the look and mannerisms of an unbalanced, greedy thug- a role he played to perfection in a number of shows during that time. And Sorrell Booke, a delightful actor who would go on to great notoriety playing Boss Hogg in The Dukes of Hazzard, enjoys a smaller albeit important role as another one of the thieves. Enjoyable episode which well-represented the series.

Decent but not a must-see.

"Death Chain" begins with a violent murder as some guy (Don Gordon) deliberately runs over a young lady. Next, the lady's boss (William Windom) hires Cannon to get to the bottom of the killing. But the boss' interest is far more than that of an employer--the lady was also his mistress and this is why he didn't go to the police, as he's afraid his wife will learn of his infidelities. As to why the woman was killed, it turns out that she was part of a robbery--and greed pushed the various participants to try to take ALL the loot for themselves.

This episode of "Cannon" is pretty good. I have noticed in the pilot and two episodes I've just watched that this rotund detective does a lot more brawling than I might have expected and in the end, it all boils down to Cannon crushing the wind out of the killer. Along the way, the show is exciting and well done. Not a great show but a very good one.

CANNON'S CLIENT, WITH A BIT OF A PROBLEM.

10 STARS.

Producer Quinn Martin hired two vets for this second episode; director Jerry Jameson, behind MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and I SPY, also British tv writer Paul Playdon, who was associated with the MOD SQUAD and THE ROOKIES at the time. He did his homework.

DEATH CHAIN (love the title) is a well done murder mystery putting mild mannered businessman William Windom in a big, big jam. He has a secret lover who's also a thief --and she promptly gets herself killed. Stewart Moss, whose style was similar to Bradford Dillman, plays Woodward. One of the best bad guys, Don Gordon guest stars. Gordon had a lengthy resume, and more than likely worked with William Conrad at Warner Brothers/ABC.

More good scripts were on the way so CBS initially placed CANNON on Tuesday nights after HAWAII FIVE O. The ratings were lukewarm at first, and since CBS was betting on another tough detective, the series was eventually moved into MANNIX's 10pm time slot on Wednesday nights.

One of the shrewdest moves in tv history. The show's ratings by season 2 shot way up, eventually securing the top 10 spot, making it one of the most watched mid week tv shows. Meanwhile, MANNIX switched to Sunday nights, followed by BARNABY JONES, re-named CBS mystery night. Both shows also became big ratings winners.

By the way, Cannon looks rather trim in this episode and quite dapper. I think Quinn Martin was trying to figure out what way to go with his character in these early shows, either business casual or windbreaker cool, which eventually won out. Cannon would also smoke his famous director's pipe.

In the spot the face department; Bob Harks plays a photographer. This was one of many appearances he made in bit parts, which was his speciality. He held a record for appearing in just about every single tv show for decades.

Note the background harpsichord music, which was a neat addition in the early seasons. It is beautifully done.

More to come. SEASON 1, Episode 2 remastered (2008) CBS/ Paramount dvd box set Number One. Box #2 contains the second half season episodes. Check out the classic back cover photos. Recommended.
