Everybody Loves a Baby
Prismark106 November 2020
For once good fortune falls on Budgie's lap. Inga, one of Charlie Endell's stripper's has had a baby.

The trouble is she does not like the baby and does not want to keep it. Inga does not even have a clue who the father is.

Budgie spots a demoralised older man Leopold King in the pub. His much younger wife has just lost a baby. A thought goes through Budgie's head that could kill two birds.

Budgie plans to give Inga's baby to the older man and pocket £300.

However when Budgie is flashing money about, people around him get suspicious. Hazel thinks that Budgie could be the father of the child even though he was in prison at the time of the conception.

Even Inga thinks something is up and wants to know what happened to her baby. Charlie Endell has to sort the mess out, he knows Leopold King who is a good friend and thinks the baby will be better off with him.

You could feel sorry for Budgie in this episode. Money just goes through his hands like water. At least Budgie figures out just who could be the father of the baby.

There is some nice comedy here, Budgie is a bit likeable here even though he is selling a baby.

The series captures the seediness of the London strip clubs with strippers that have Swedish name. Just check that scene where Charlie Endell sells a ticket to a punter to enter his club and then fleece's a few more quid from him for a membership fee.

Warning: Spoilers
Adam Faith once had a hit with 'Someone Else's Baby' which might have served as an alternative title for this episode of 'Budgie'. Inga ( the gorgeous Margaret Nolan ), a buxom stripper at Charlie Endell's club, gives birth, but does not know ( nor care ) who the father is. Charlie sends Budgie along to visit her in hospital ( along with three other strippers ). Whilst waiting for them to return, he witnesses a man dumping a teddy bear in the hospital dustbin. He is Leopold ( Johnny Shannon ), a Jewish book maker. His wife has just given birth to a dead child. As he is in his early Fifties and she in her Twenties, their chances of having another are slim indeed. Knowing Inga cannot stand the sight of her offspring, he arranges to sell it to Leopold for £300. The sale takes place. Leopold gets his child and Budgie gets the money - £20.00 of which he passes on to Inga. But then things go wrong. The stripper changes her mind and wants the child back...

I seem to recall 'Coronation Street' did a similar plot in the '90's. It was Terry Duckworth ( Nigel Pivaro ) selling his son Tommy to his partner's grandparents, upsetting his mother greatly. This is a good episode sure enough, and things get really rough between Budgie and Hazel when the latter discovers he gave £20.00 to Inga. Margaret Nolan holds the distinction of having been in both 'Carry On' and James Bond films, along with Valerie Leon. Johnny Shannon was 'Wacky' ( also a bookie ) in 'Beryl's Lot'.

Funniest moment - Hazel accuses Budgie of being the father of Inga's child. He points out he could not have been as he was in prison at the time. "What do you think I am? Elastic Man?".

At the end, Budgie deduces Charlie must be the baby's father. Endell swears him to secrecy.
