Really silly...but really enjoyable.
planktonrules25 July 2021
"Voice in the Night" is one of the more unbelievable and silly episodes of "Barnaby Jones". That being said, it's also very entertaining...provided you turn off your brain and just enjoy it for what it is and nothing more.

When the story begins, a judge receives a phone call....from a supposedly dead woman! The voice threatens her....and only moments later, the judge is murdered. Now understand...after receiving this threatening call, someone offered to drive her home but she walked instead!

When Barnaby begins investigating the case, he realizes that not only did a judge die...but a doctor. And they both had something in common...they both worked on committing the same woman to a psychiatric hospital years ago. Oddly, however, the woman never made it to the hospital, as she supposedly drowned that same day. Where all this goes is REALLY tough to believe in so many ways...but it is entertaining.

I found that predicting what would happen in the episode wasn't difficult. But it did entertain...a lot. But there are so many possible problems with the plot...so don't expect perfection, just mindless entertainment.

By the way, it is interesting that so far Tony Geary has been on this show twice....and both times he played sex offenders or a guy falsely accused of being one. Considering his later role on "General Hospital", this means he definitely is a very type cast actor!

A young Tony Geary

Warning: Spoilers
Yes it's more entertaining than anything too thought provoking. Reminds me of the stalker/ slasher movies circa mid sixties to maybe mid to late 70's . Example as stated before the judge chooses to walk home alone!

I did vaguely remember watching it during the ordeal run and probably reruns. Watching it again I am often struck by how strong Barnaby is ! Never under estimate his observation skills or ability to see through people.

The solution I didn't remember so it did catch me a bit by surprise but it did fit what was happening.

Yes indeed casting directors has a certain kind of role in mind for Tony Geary. Interesting though he actually played a clergyman on The Partridge Family!

Interesting too that Linda Kelsey who was a television mainstay at the time didn't have a bigger impact in this episode.

Definitely entertaining episode. We start seeing that newer format with dividing up episodes between the three regulars - Barnaby , Betty and JR with two doing less and one featured more.

THE PHONE CALL THAT KILLS!
tcchelsey2 February 2024
This is an eerie story, best written by series producer Robert Sherman, who wrote the cult favorite PICTURE MOMMY DEAD (1966). Later, many episodes for FANTASY ISLAND. He had imagination!

Both a distinguished judge and a doctor are murdered, tied to a woman who they committed to a mental hospital. This story has its moments, particularly the start when the judge receives a creepy phone call from the grave? If you are a cop show fan, you'll recognize the same plot (returning from the dead!) from a MANNIX episode, also CANNON, nevertheless a lot of fun, shades of all those campy horror films us kids grew up on.

Calling Barnaby and JR. Super cast here with James Naughton as Dr. Manning, who previously co-starred on the tv series, PLANET OF THE APES. Joan Tompkins (MY THREE SONS) plays Judge Royce.

Look for Linda Kelsey, about a year before her co-starring on LOU GRANT. Anthony Geary in an early role before fame on GENERAL HOSPITAL. Yes, there is a mistake. His character has a disabled left arm, yet he uses it to hold a clipboard. They should have caught that one, although it may have been left in to spruce up the mystery. Hmmm?

Best part is trying to figure it out before Barnaby.

Good luck. Solid late night chills. SEASON 5 EPISODE 7 remastered color CBS/Paramount dvd box set.
