Epitome of Excellence

Warning: Spoilers
Every now and then, you get a break, and this is one of those times. As are many others when you have an actor like John Dehner. No part too big or too small, and one of the problems studios had was the fact that he could almost overpower any role. ALMOST, that is, because, he is one of the truly great universal talents in acting. In this episode, he plays Roland Dumont, a forgotten but still very capable actor possessing of great talent and physical conditioning, also daring.

The plot was absolutely predictable, even faking Stu into drinking the drugged milk. Jacqueline Beer (Suzanne) was very pretty as Roland romanced her before he burgled another payback victim. Anyone would know that he was going to put the stuff back; it was his plan all along. I thought that Stu had a stick up his butt, trying to talk Roland into giving up, and I realized Roland planned THAT, too.

I loved it; a simple plot with great acting. It doesn't get better. As I watched it, I thought to myself that Dehner would have made a perfect Matt Helm. Now, I'm talking about the character from the original book series by Donald Hamilton. He had the talent and the appearance to pull it off. At this time the series was beginning to be published, and it would be several years before they brought out Dean Martin (real-life owner of Dino's Lodge) in some ridiculous comedies that insulted everything but Mr. Hamilton's pocketbook - a shame, in my opinion.

I can't remember which episode of the Rockford Files it was, but John Dehner played a con man to perfection, and was one of the funniest parts in that series. A great actor. (R.I.P. Mr. Dehner, and thank you).

HAVE A GLASS OF MILK AND A NICE, LONG SLEEP!

John Dehner, long in demand for dramatic and offbeat roles, plays an old film star called Roland Dumont --who is financing his comeback in a most unusual way. He's a crook, and he's very clever at what he does. Dehner is over the top here, playing a John Barrymore type actor who turns to being a gentleman cat burgler, and with a variety of artistic, if not scary disguises. This guy is one for the books.

10 STARS.

Stu gets called into the case and its an interesting ride, sort of a cat and mouse game with Dumont, who also serves up drugged glasses of milk! Great appearance by popular character actress Norma Varden as Mrs. Hotchkiss, one of Dumont's wealthy victims.

A fun story by Fred Brady, who wrote 12 episodes for the series, also many for TIGHTROPE, starring Mike Connors. Not too long after this episode Brady died very suddenly, and it was a big loss to Warners. He was an exceptional tv and film writer for years, and also an actor in the 40s.

Watch this one for John Dehner, truly an actors actor and quite athletic for the part. Note; Dumont pulls into the studio in his antique car, which is actually the Warner Brothers Stage 6 entrance.

SEASON 4 EPISODE 6 remastered Warner Brothers dvd box set. Also to note, some of the episodes are released via a European production company and may not play on dvd players. Research before you buy.

Self financed comeback
bkoganbing9 June 2017
One of the more off the wall plots in the history of 77 Sunset Strip came in this episode. In it John Dehner plays a long forgotten film star who used to do his own stunts in films like Douglas Fairbanks.

He wants to make a comeback and has discovered a highly interesting way of self financing his own comeback film. He's gone in for cat burglary and he has the athletic skill to do the jobs. During the program we see how Dehner has kept himself in shape.

The LAPD is baffled and the insurance company hires Bailey&Spencer. No matter what he does and he's practically daring the law to catch him neither Efrem Zimbalist or the cops can catch him in the act or locate where he's hidden his loot.

More I cannot say, but this is one pip of an episode.
