life goes on, whether we are in it or not
nhermida19 February 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This is a very nice little film that shows the viewer the cruelty of life. It presents a man that undoubtedly thought he was doing great work providing brain tumor patients some hope by operating on them, who had no life himself, being completely absorbed by his work. All comes to a halt when he is the one with the incurable tumor, and through a series of events sees how life is different for other people, what he has missed, when he ventures into a remote area of Uruguay (a beach town called Devil's Point or "La Punta del Diablo"), how death reaches us all, and how life continues whether you are in it or not--as he said it, "a horror".

Note: In another review in this page, the reviewer has missed that the protagonist, the neurosurgeon, actually has a tumor himself.

Sometimes they don't come back

Warning: Spoilers
The random nature of fate is the subject of this effective Argentinian-Uruguayan-Venezuelan co-production about Roberto (Manuel Callo), a middle-aged doctor trying to come to terms with the innate pointlessness of his business: trying to cure the incurable. After removing a brain tumor from a young woman, Roberto decides he needs a vacation, but finds himself pulled into another tragic life when he spots the mysterious and bewigged Maria (Romina Paula) traveling by bus to the titular spot on the coast, where it never stops raining except when it snows. Well acted and beautifully shot by Rolo Pulpeiro, Devil's Point avoids the maudlin trappings of most cancer films and makes its point quietly and elegantly. It's well worth your attention, as long as you can cope with the tiny subtitles.
