Famous, brave...and seriously flawed.

"Lindbergh" is an installment of "The American Experience" which needs an epilogue. This is because for 1990, the biography of the man was exceptionally good. But in 2003, MORE information came out about the man...and it was NOT good!. It seems that Lindbergh was a bigamist...with another family in England. But to make it worse, he also had quite a few illegitimate children with several other women...including the sister of his second (and secret) wife! He was in many ways, a completely amoral and awful man...and the full extent of this wasn't known in 1990.

Despite this omission, this biography is certainly a 'warts and all' treatment of the man. The first portion is about his very brave crossing of the Atlantic and praised him for many things. However, through the course of the film, it began to paint a picture of a very ugly sort of man...a lover of eugenics and the Nazis. Not exactly heroic stuff, but an honest assessment of him nevertheless.

This is a great documentary...and paints a pretty thorough portrait of what was known about the man at the time. Well worth seeing...and also a bit sad.
