Very funny... deserves a DVD release

Warning: Spoilers
Having watched this again recently I am surprised that the BBC has never given it a DVD release as it is very funny... perhaps they are scared they might receive a fatwa.

Set during a long hot Summer in the very near future Martin Clunes plays Ben Black, the presenter of a live TV show called "Sex 'n' Death". This show is never strays into decency; we see audience members offered money to strip naked, mud wrestling women dressed to represent major religions and the host wearing only a loin cloth and crown of thorns while on a cross. Off screen his personal life isn't so good, his wife Bella (Caroline Goodall) has left him because she learnt he had a nineteen year old mistress, his mistress has left him for another celebrity and he constantly trying to get the better of a rival television presenter played by Martin Jarvis.

While this is is a funny programme it is also fairly dark in places. It certainly isn't for the easily offended as it features swearing, full frontal nudity, religious parody and scenes that are just in bad taste. If however you aren't easily offended you should have a good laugh. The actors all do a good job, especially Clunes and Goodall in the lead roles.

Good!

When I see movie like this and I think how many Van Damme movies I've seen... it sort of makes me think I'm not as smart as I thought.

:)

Anyway, when you've had enough of the typical american movie, see this.

A Unique Look into TV in the not too distant future
victoriasquire31 May 2004
Being a big Martin Clunes fan anyway, it was inevitable that I was going to enjoy this programme. The thing that amazed me was how much I enjoyed it! A TFI Friday/OTT Cable show. The host, insomniac Ben Black, the producer, hassled ex wife Stella, the stalker magician Fandango & the Jeremy Beadlesque character played by Martin Jarvis all come together & interact perfectly, making this one of the funniest & darkest comedies I have ever seen. Bens awful childhood (poor little orphan Ben) & his impending divorce, the fact that he hasn't slept properly for weeks due to the heat wave & his supermodel girlfriend Sophie has just dumped him (by telling the newspapers before him!) all spiral into events that could result in his suicide or get him more viewing figures than ever before. 5 years on this is still something I Watch at least every couple of months, it's still as fresh & as compelling as when first shown on TV & I would like to congratulate the writers on that. More shows like this please!

Great movie, and I'm American!

I only mention I'm an American, because this is clearly a movie made with Brits in mind. So, I can tell you I was surprised I liked it so much, and it's obvious there is a bigger cultural difference between the U.S. and the U.K. than I ever thought before. Clunes is a great actor, and he's awesome in this movie. I have liked him ever since I discovered British Men Behaving Badly. The story itself is just odd...very very odd...but it's very entertaining, with a nice mix of comedy and drama. The format of the story is very unusual, from what I have ever seen in the past, atleast. But, as I said, it all works out very nicely. Nicely done all the way around. 8/10
