Prosecutors argue that Dixon hired his friend Dave Shepard to kill Sonnier in order to punish or get back at an ex-girlfriend Sonnier was dating. Shepard accepted a plea deal and testified against Dixon who was convicted of murder.

Courser attempts to bury the scandal by encouraging an aid to publicly email a false set of lurid allegations against him. The aid refuses to assist in the cover-up and, after being dismissed by Courser, goes public revealing the attempted cover-up and the affair. Courser and Gamrat are forced to resign.
