Sex & Nudity

  • The basic plot of the movie has to do with child marriage, particularly between older men and severely underage girls.
  • While struggling with her husband in a domestic dispute, Mrs. Colton flashes some cleavage at the camera.
  • Jake Bolby's "courtship" with little Jennie Colton includes a scene in which, much to her distress, he kisses her full on the lips.

Violence & Gore

  • Freddie's father gets shot, but survives.
  • Mr. Colton and his partners get into a knock-down-drag-out brawl with Jake Bolby over distributing the profits from their illegal still, ending with Jake being soundly thrashed.
  • Jake and his gang drag Jennie's teacher out of her home late one night intending to tar and feather her, but Mr. Colton intercepts them and thrashes Jake again.

Profanity

  • Racial slur: near the end, one of the assistant district attorney's men casually drops an n-bomb in reference to his having an ulterior motive for getting the law against child marriage passed.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • Jennie's father, Mr. Colton, is indicated to be running an illegal distillery with help from Jake Bolby and Angelo and (apparently) several other men.
  • During his domestic dispute with Mrs. Colton, Mr. Colton is indicated to be fighting mad in part because he's drunk.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • The domestic violence between Mr. and Mrs. Colton is rather intense, and may disturb younger viewers.
  • The attempt to tar and feather the teacher may be too intense for younger viewers.
  • The general theme of Jake Bolby's attempting to force little Jennie Colton to marry him may be too disturbing for less mature viewers, particularly in the scene where he forcibly kisses her.

Spoilers

The Parents Guide items below may give away important plot points.

Sex & Nudity

  • Eleven-and-a-half-year-old Jennie (played by twelve-year-old Shirley Mills and her stand-in of an unspecified age, Bernice Stobaugh) appears naked for approximately four minutes while skinny dipping as her boyfriend Freddie stands watch. Her buttocks and breasts are occasionally visible throughout the scene. In this scene, she also discusses with Freddie why she won't allow him to go skinny dipping with her anymore, contending that he might start getting "bad ideas" from seeing her naked.
  • On his wedding night near the end, Jake Bolby instructs Jennie to remove her clothes and get into his bed as he goes out to close up his house for the evening.
  • At the end, Freddie proposes that once they're a little older, he and Jennie can get married, and she kisses him romantically in celebration.

Violence & Gore

  • Mr. and Mrs. Colton get into a domestic dispute over rumors about her supposed infidelity, and she gets slapped around a bit. Then she grabs a knife and stabs him in the chest with it, though only enough to give him a flesh wound.
  • Later, off camera, Mr. Colton actually does get stabbed to death.
  • Near the end, Jake gets shot to death.
