The cadence is somber and it is painful to watch how calculating Tom is in his pursuit of this comfortable life. Irony is personified in this character. The performance is exceptional, but it causes me to wonder in what sort of mind such a personality is created. The suspense is palpable in the development of the plot as each consequence of Tom's actions unfold. The pace can be described in one word: plodding. Mr. Ripley enjoys none of what would be called the sweet life, but is completely saturated in the commission of his crimes. The tone of the film seldom varies from the intensity set by the devious plot. Every character acts and speaks politely in this macabre. Mr. Ripley never gets uncomfortable but is an expert in making the viewer very uncomfortable with his continued smile and affable nature.
