Still used as a tool to solve whole crime cases and to this day if someone accused of a crime is offered a lie detector and refuses to take it or fails it the police, media, and public in USA will fully believe the person is guilty. There is no upside to taking them and there are plenty of cases where double-agents fooled such tests anyhow as you can't know why people are lying or why they are not believing their own stories or are maybe just too nervous.
