Review of Troll

Troll (2022)
7/10
A Troll with potential
16 March 2024
Troll, another addition to the burgeoning Scandinavian folklore-inspired genre, fails to live up to the captivating standards set by its predecessors like Troll Hunter and Hilda. While not entirely devoid of merit, it's a middling effort that struggles to carve out its own identity.

The protagonist, a young and headstrong blonde paleontologist, lacks depth and relatability from the outset. Her journey feels predictable, with every obstacle conveniently overcome to serve the plot's needs. The casting choice of Billy Campbell as her male counterpart adds little to the narrative, as his character fades into obscurity without leaving a lasting impression.

When the titular troll finally makes its appearance, the film fails to capitalize on the potential for tension and intrigue. Our protagonist's swift resolution of the conflict feels contrived, and her inexplicable sway over the supporting characters robs the climax of any real stakes.

Without delving into spoilers, it suffices to say that the ending falls flat, lacking the catharsis or satisfaction one expects from a creature feature. Despite competent performances and seamless effects, Troll struggles to elicit empathy due to its reliance on formulaic and unappealing characters.

In the end, Troll is a forgettable entry in a genre brimming with potential. While the concept and visual execution show promise, its failure to deliver engaging characters and a compelling narrative ultimately leave viewers wanting more.
