Nevermind the Japanese military wasn't ready to surrender even after the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki. Ronald Reagan rides the wave of fear of the Soviets into the White House. Korea Air 007 was downed due to the tensions created by the US government and military. They never mentioned that the Soviets secretly recovered the black boxes from Korea Air 007. The Soviets hid them in a vault for a decade.
