Don't Go Chasing Rainbows

Warning: Spoilers
In 1995 TLC told us not to chase waterfalls. Sixty-five years earlier a theater troupe was Chasing Rainbows.

Movies featuring theater troupes were fairly popular in the 30's (see "The Dance of Life" (1929), "42nd Street" (1933), "Gold Diggers of 1933," and others). The main people in the theater troupe in "Chasing Rainbows" were Eddie Rock (Jack Benny), the director, Terry Fay (Charles King), the leading man, and Carlie Seymour (Bessie Love), the second leading woman. Also of note were Bonnie (Marie Dressler) and Polly (Polly Moran) who were also part of the troupe, and frenemies.

First, it needs to be stated that the copy I watched was missing footage. It was missing mostly footage of the theater routines they did which, if you're going to omit anything, that was the best part to omit.

The main story revolved around Terry (Charles King), the leading man, and the fact that he'd been in a series of relationships where he lost the woman to another man. After each loss he would get melodramatic and threaten suicide. Each time Eddie Rock and Carlie Seymour (who was secretly in love with Terry) would be there to talk him off the metaphorical ledge.

Beyonce sang about being crazy in love. Well, Carlie was stupid in love with Terry. She would hem his clothes, fix him up, dote over him, and basically mother him without any of it being reciprocated because Terry was too oblivious to realize that she was doing all of that because she was in love with him.

Terry's latest flame was a woman named Daphne (Nita Martan). She had been flown in to play the female lead after the last female lead left when she hooked up with a wealthy fan. Again, Carlie would have to wait her turn.

The part of the movie that had me about to turn it off was when Terry walked in on Daphne kissing another man. He left her in a huff and went to be consoled by Carlie, the girl secretly in love with him. Eventually, he realized that Carlie was the best thing for him. She'd been there for him through all his various break-ups and she cared for him more than anyone else in the world. Carlie was beyond thrilled to hear that her crush actually liked her too. They were set to go on a date when not a minute after leaving Carlie, Terry was reeled in by Daphne and the two got married.

Carlie was heartbroken. And that led to a disturbingly and awkwardly long laughing scene where Carlie laughed and laughed like she was either insane or on the verge of crying.

Terry was a naive, spineless POS. Daphne went on to cheat on him again with the same man. Terry was fully aware of the cheating this time, but it only resulted in his wife, Daphne, leaving the troupe. From that point forward there was missing footage again so I'm not sure exactly what happened. But, if I had to guess, I'd say that he hooked up with Carlie who was waiting for her crush to become available again.
