Basket Case (1982)

When a bad movie can be good
8 January 2024
Basket Case is one of those B movies made in the 80s that, with its imperfections, has gained a lot of admiration. It has many flaws that are common in these movies. The script is certainly not very good and has flaws, but the story it tells is quite good and original. The performances are mostly exaggerated, giving the characters a cartoonish feel. It's clear that the filmmakers didn't want the film to be very well acted or well written. That's because it is a horror movie with black humor included. The main idea of the film is to horrify, but also to entertain through some ridiculous or out-of-context situations. The special effects are obvious and it is quite noticeable that the Belial creature is a puppet. The stop-motion scenes are also very evident, but due to the low budget, the scenes of Belial moving alone had to have been done in some way or another. There are scenes where he doesn't even move and that says a lot. The gore is what can be highlighted the most and many of the death scenes fall into the absurd and exaggerated. What undoubtedly gives this film a lot of strength is its bizarre story, which in itself manages to be a horror story, but at the same time generates empathy and pity for Duane. Even though Belial is a monster, it is clear that he has many repressed feelings that led him to become a murderous beast. The flashback, which summarizes their past history, gives many ideas about how difficult the lives of these characters must have been. Basket Case is one of those movies that doesn't need to be excellent to tell a story or have an entertaining time, it is a pretty bizarre movie that is great for its flaws that make it fun to watch. This is another case that sometimes bad movies can be as good as, or even better than, great cinematic masterpieces. My final rating for this movie is a 7/10.
