The Childe (2023)
7/10
Top, but a little bit over the top
3 January 2024
Asian films, especially South Korean films, are for the most part in the upper range in terms of quality. Of course, there are also gradations in this area, I would call it A and B class. An A can still be sold to the mainstream viewer who is unfamiliar with Asia, but this works less well in the B range. Technically everything is flawless, entertainment is also provided and there is no lack of interesting ideas. Other twists and turns are more tricky and might not fit. The appropriate adjective is "over the top". Actors who pay homage to overacting, (Western) cultural behaviour patterns that are difficult to comprehend and scripts that zigzag in a way that is hard to follow. In short, the excessive demands of local viewing habits. Speaking of over the top, the eponymous role or rather the actor of "The Childe" is certainly a defining factor here. It was still good, unreservedly entertaining, but I don't need to see it again.

As a bonus, there's an explanation of what a kopino is, so a bit of useless knowledge.
