The secret portal of time, found in the oddest place.

Warning: Spoilers
This time travel movie is a hard one to dislike, yet for me a difficult one to praise. It's a modern set version of a 1959 short story that originally switched between the civil war and the late 50's, but was altered for this to switch the 50's with the 90's. Yet there's excellent performances by Campbell Scott and Jennifer Jason Leigh, both in dual roles, as their modern counterparts (an engaged couple who live together and are preparing their home) and a star-crossed couple living in Boston during the Civil War.

Against his fiancee's advice during modern times, Scott purchases a very expensive desk from the civil war and finds a secret compartment from which he is able to exchange letters with the civil war era Leigh, warning her of great danger. It's another case of you can't change destiny, especially if it's already happened. The wonderful Estelle Parsons is enjoyable to watch as Scott's mother who has an expertise in spiritual issues like time travel yet warns her son of the repercussions. It takes a while to get going, but when it does, even with the illogical fallacies, it's Fascinating.
