Mixed Baggage (2022 TV Movie)
9/10
Very enjoyable rom-com

Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this movie as much as I have any rom-com in a while. The premise was a little unusual and creative. A guy and a girl experience a romantic connection with each other on a flight, and, though it appears that they might be ships that passed in the night, fate seemingly intervenes by having them switch bags. But this isn't really a tale about how the two of them reconnect, as that happens fairly early in the movie. It's about how the relationship between them develops.

The two main characters were both likable and believable. The dialog between them was real and natural, not the stilted, cheesy dialog that plagues many rom-coms. Leanne Lapp as Evie was great, coming across as nice and relatable, even though she's also gorgeous. Spencer Lord as Jake was even better, exuding a kind of shy, slightly awkward charm that's very endearing. You sincerely wanted both of these two to finally get together.

One of the things I liked best was that Evie and Jake's relationship wasn't always smooth. There were moments of awkwardness. The same was true of the other two couples in the movie. That seemed to be a theme of the movie, namely, that relationships won't always go smoothly, but that you shouldn't necessarily give up. If you use rom-coms as a template for reality, you might think that, when you find "the one", everything will go smoothly, but in the real world, that's almost never the case. In relationships, you have to be forgiving of your partners' weaknesses, and you can't expect everything to be perfect all the time. But that's no reason to give up on the relationship, necessarily.

If you are a fan of rom-coms, you will certainly enjoy this movie, and, if you are like me, you will appreciate that it is more original than most of the cookie-cutter offerings out there. With good writing and good performances, you've got a rom-com that will more than keep you entertained.
