Review of Aogiri

Tokyo Ghoul: Aogiri (2014)
Season 1, Episode 10
7/10
The set-up
29 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The 11th ward of Tokyo is under siege by the ghoul terrorist group known as Aogiri Tree. The branch of the CCG devoted to the 11th ward is completely destroyed.

At Anteiku, a large, unpleasant ghoul named Banjou arrives, and instantly smells Rize's scent on Kaneki, due to the fact Kaneki has her organs. He threatens Kaneki until Kaneki accidentally headbutts him and knocks him unconscious. When he comes to, his personality has completely changed, and he begs Kaneki for forgiveness, weirdly enough.

THEN, however, yet more ghouls arrive. Ayato, Touka's brother who we were introduced in the last episode in flashback, and then Yamori, known as the 13th Ward's Jason due to his physical size, brutality and hockey mask.

Yamori basically tenderises Kaneki, beating him completely bloody, and makes off with him. There's also some other ghouls that make an appearance, such as Nico, a transvestite.

I still think this show has too many characters.

Lastly, we see the reappearance of the narcissistic sociopath Tsukiyama, who, like Nishi, seems to now be a good guy. I thought they killed him back in the church.

And then it's over. I wasn't that crazy about this episode. It did however feel like they're setting up something better. With only two episodes left, here's hoping it pays off.
