This is an above average, intelligent SF-movie with great actors and impressive special effects in the tradition of "Bladerunner" and the "Terminator"-Series. However, I kept wishing the director Gareth Edwards would have used the bombast more sparingly. The continuous onslaught of explosions, battle scenes, and martial technology felt redundant after a while. It almost appeared as if Edwards knows only one dynamic: Fortissimo, Yet, with his first film "Monsters" he has proven that he is very capable of creating a poetic, magical atmosphere and intimate scenes. Which made the horror moments so much more powerful. I wish he would have remembered that.
Also, for my taste, "The Creator" was a CGI-overkill. We live in a time where the production value of a film does not automatically increase with every additional CGI-feature. Audiences long for real footage. I would have attached to the make-believe world much more deeply had it not looked so utterly artificial all the time.
With less focus on spectacle and more focus on story, character, and originality, this might have become a masterpiece. All in all it is an interesting and impressive work, but not as moving as it could have been would the director have remembered his roots.
