The Crime Genre is Born
11 September 2023
Originally exhibited as a Kinetoscope-type of film, which were shown in peepshow-style parlors, Arrest of a Pickpocket (1895), wouldn't be released in projection-type, movie theaters until 1896. The film is listed in many places, for the year 1895, noting its Kinetoscope release, but didn't hit motion picture exhibition, until many months after the first motion pictures became available to the paying public, in the early months of the dawn of the movies. Arrest of a Pickpocket (1895), would become known as one of the first crime-dramas ever made. It's exciting for a pioneering film and establishes a genre, during the first year of the film industry. It is simply shot in front of a wall, covered with flyers, as two men handcuff a pocket-napper. It is pure history, in the making.

8.9 (A- MyGrade) = 9 IMDB.
