A Rather Decent Coming of Age
23 August 2023
Warning: Spoilers
This film was listed as a comedy, and I guess in part it is a comedy in the sense that it is a coming of age film. Actually, it is an independent film made by some guy who originally made a cut down version for Youtube, and when it was suggested that he make it a full length feature he produced this. I'm not sure how much it costs but I suspect that it wasn't all that much (especially since he filmed in places that he wasn't actually supposed to be filming).

So, it is about this young university student who has travelled to Los Angeles from Dallas to go to university and suddenly finds that things just really don't seem to be working out all that well. He goes to a party and meets a woman, but he is quite awkward and ends up leaving and returning to his dorm. Anyway, back at the dorm, he isn't able to go into his room because, well, something happened to his roommate, so he goes out to the common room where he meets the girl again. After a failed attempt at sex, they spend the night hanging out together and at the end of the night are more successful, however in the morning she blows him off.

I wouldn't say that we all go through this, but I guess I can relate to this movie, being a lot like the main character. He's an introvert, and he is struggling to be accepted. Of course, he suddenly discovers that some people aren't actually all that nice, and people who seem to be friends aren't necessarily friends. Sure, it has a happy ending, but the thing is that when they have the fight, he is actually strong enough to point out that he isn't the only one who is flawed, and that it wasn't actually the sex, it was the companionship that he experienced.

There are a lot of coming of age films, but the thing is that I feel that this film actually exceeds them in the sense that there are a lot of elements that people can relate to. Like, he does eventually make some friends, but he also learns that one person to reach out to is him roommate, who ends up being more than happy to oblige. In fact, he gives him a few life lessons, and he soon learns that actually making some friends isn't all that hard.

The thing that I really appreciate about these low budget films is that they tend to be a lot more character and plot driven, but also are able to break out of the Hollywood mould to create something unique. It is interesting that the director has been flagged as one to watch, though from my experience many of these directors that make a huge hit with a low budget film (Kevin Smith) go on to start producing rubbish. On the other hand, once they have got their foot into the industry, they also have a lot more options open up to them. Anyway, it will be interesting to see where this director goes.
