constructive criticism
27 May 2023
CGI is better compared to any ph fantasy shows, not hollywood level but at least it improved and upgrading the mecha design into "infinity" type is good. I don't watch ph shows because of super boring, overdramatic and redundant plots, annoying flirty ships or cringey adult scenes and never-ending overdramatic old style acting, I only watch foreign shows because of diversity of genre and high quality (not low bakya quality) I tried to see this show out of curiosity, my observations are:

1. Man to man fighting scenes - very slow, very soft, lame, lousy posture/stance and it's obvious the hits aren't landing, movements not sharp (it looks like they were afraid to hit the others and their bodies are stiff or heavy, you can see the softness and hesitation in their movements), for local standard it's fine but if you compare it to foreign action shows the quality is extremely far (subpar)...they need a strict professional martial arts/fighting instructor for better choreography and technique, a good camera angle/tricks and movements can contribute for a convincing effect too...much better if the actors will undergo real martial arts training even just for months (e.g. Wushu for flexibility, jiujitsu or karate for better fighting stance, fencing and kendo for sword fights, etc.) for enhanced movements and speed...even some simple hit scenes, hits were obviously too far (simple slap, simple kick) these need a good camera angle... please try to watch a lot of foreign action movies (not those action movies which only use guns, guns can be used while just standing.. gun is a lazy alternative for a beautiful martial arts scene) and observe the details, the actors' movements and the martial arts they use, the camera angles/tricks and its movements then research how they execute these scenes beautifully and satisfying (e.g. The raid: redemption, the witch: subversion, so close (sword fight), crouching tiger hidden dragon, ong bak, and a lot more), it can help...watch and learn from them, no need to imitate, just take note some of the techniques for improvement...i don't know why but this show took years of preparation and finished all the episodes before airing and the network has been doing a lot of action-fantasy/action genre shows for more than a decade already but the substandard quality (sorry it is the truth, you might hate me for telling the truth) of all of their so-so man to man fight scenes never ever improve, most of the choreographies are already basic and not complicated but the very lame execution is still the same (take a look at the Japanese tokusatsu/super sentai man to man fight scenes in which the time of preparation is a lot shorter but still good and way better than this show or any of the ph fighting scenes), sometimes it makes me think that these tv networks don't listen and accept constructive criticisms due to stagnant substandard fight scenes... even in the other networks this part never improved, they are stuck in a boring lame "long-time obsolete" 70s fighting style, it's 2023 already please? Please pay attention to these scenes. Fighting scene is also a part of "acting" so it needs to be taken more seriously, a good fighting scene is also a good acting (especially when a show's genre has "action" written on it)....acting doesn't end in drama and comedy only, so please stop too much focusing on drama and comedy only, there's a lot of genre and the poor execution of man-to-man fighting scenes are screaming "not paying enough attention", very poor training and bare minimum, please improve it...

2. Adding too many unnecessary fillers (both non-canon ships and parts of the story) and characters, not sticking to the source material - a lot of live actions flopped and/or heavily criticized because of this (most notable of them all is the dragonball evolution in which the author himself approved the live action of his work and also cooperated but flopped because of this reason, and the author himself didn't like the outcome of the movie... I remember there's this show from long time ago - "zaido: pulis pangkalawakan" which was also approved by Toei but flopped too and this is one of the reasons, i hope this show won't experience the same fate as these shows so their effort won't be wasted), most fans imagine how their favorite manga/manhwa/manhua/anime/webtoon/donghua will look like in real life, live action is giving them a chance to make their dream come true, so expectation is in there. And I noticed, the backstories are too long, backstories are fine but this genre is a combination of mecha and shounen genre. Adding too much drama, romance and backtories will make it look like a shoujo or josei genre and it's skippable, a little romance is fine as long as it's canon, just don't add too much fanservice. Some characters are OOC (out of character, please research about the common anime character types like kuudere, tsundere, yandere, etc. So you may understand more the characters when producing a live action, this anime is a Japanese show so please as much as possible, stop insisting this pinoy style character which is undesirable). Sticking to the source material is also sign of respect to the original author/creator and its fanbase/fandom.

3. Acting - deliveries of dialogs are often dry and cringey, some weapon shouts are flat (i mute while watching, very cringey). There are intances that the acting is not suitable for the situation (e.g. Acting too serious in a light or relax situation like some of the characters look like they are always depressed or annoyed even in a very light situation where depressive expression is not needed, some cockpit scenes where the movements are too much compared to the movements of camera or cockpit, and lacking energy in a situation when a lively energy is needed, i skip often) please just lessen this way of acting too (acting too serious all the time, it's kinda OA and cringey, if the situation is chill, just chill) more workshop is needed to polish the acting skill.

4. Background music - needs to add more variety of music, sometimes it feels off and a bit boring due to lack of diversity (new sound and music composition) the show is often using the instrumental OST the only difference is the musical instrument, playing the opening OST while combining is good...the sound design too is kinda off sometimes. The original background music inserted from the anime is good and somewhat gives nostalgic feeling tho.

5. OST - sounds good but soft and karaoke-ish... lacking the feeling of toughness or anthem of valour...when singing the OST, the expression is much better if the singing has this emotion of challenging the enemy. The singer is not a native Nihonjin or a Nihongo speaker so the Filipino accent which makes the pronunciation a bit cringey is somewhat excusable (e.g. "tomo", "tsu", etc.) but much better if there was someone who can instruct her the right accent of the examples. The music sounds better if it is live or adding second voices.

6. Too much fanservice - there's nothing wrong with fanservice but adding too much fanservice (especially non-canon ones and this annoying bed scene) makes the story cringey

And i think, they may lessen the exposure of pilots' faces in every move of the mecha to emphasize the mecha fights, it's ok to show the faces while fighting, just lessen this part...they can put the voices of pilots talking while showing the mecha fight sometimes.

We just borrowed voltes v (rights) from Japan so as much as possible, please respect the canon source material and don't mess it.

And honestly, the only saving grace of the show is the CGI (sometimes repetitive but excusable), the drama parts are skippable especially the non-canon ships, the cheesy love triangle (or square) isn't cute and flirting ate too much part of the story (this endless flirty culture never leaves Filipino shows regardless of networks and genre).. and 2 things shocked me, naming the Gamenza as the kaiju Gamera of Kadokawa and the bed scene. These two are very risky moves, but anyway, i don't think they don't know about its copyright.

One more thing, some people are saying "people from abroad are praising the show while my countrymen are criticizing this show", some may be bashing but some are criticizing the show for its improvement, telling the poor sides is also a part of support. These people who criticize the show have seen all the contents of released episodes so they have seen its good and poor sides, while people from other countries just seen the CGI and a small piece of the show only that's why praises are often disclosed, those who have seen the source material might react when they see the non-canon parts while those who didn't see/network fan/patriotic/overproud/shippers might appreciate it. I want this show (if there's an extension because the next show isn't ready yet, or any revision) and the next one (if it happen) to succeed that's why I'm pointing out the parts that needs to improve and didn't do tatemae, especially when talking about the "overall quality" (sorry i'm not an enabler, i don't care about the downvotes of this comment, i care about quality). Free TV show doesn't mean it's ok to tolerate the poor sides of the show. The word "adaptation" won't justify the major changes of the story, meanwhile, animation of manga/manhua/manhwa is also an "adaptation". Giving constructive criticism isn't bad unless the receiver doesn't like improvement. Sometimes, we need to take note of our weakness and make it better, if not, then it's ok, there are people who don't need unsolicited help anyway. All of these are not an ad hominem but a corrective action for the sake of quality art, please stop this "bakya" mentality it ruins the quality of an art.

My reviews, i will be honest: CGI: 7/10 acting: 0.5/10 writing:0.5/10 cinematography: 4/10 fighting scene (man to man): 0.5/10 fighting scene (robots): 6/10 musical score: 1/10 OST cover: 5/10 sound design: 5/10.
