Helen tries to kill herself. In the hospital, she recalls her story. Mrs. Helen Chernen (Ida Lupino) is stuck in her marriage and taking care of her younger Katie Blaine (Joan Leslie) after their mother's death in their grubby industrial home town of Greenhill. Katie has some talent. Both want to get out and that's what they do.

This is doing the familiar rising star story. It gets rather melodramatic. It's a lot of plot. The two lead actresses are doing good work. Nevertheless, this is mostly a melodramatic version of these various similar stories. It's good led by the incomparable Ida Lupino.
