Fantastic, But Ended Without Resolving Major Issue

Warning: Spoilers
I watched Black Spot on Netflix. I started it months ago, but stopped watching to finish another series. I came back a few weeks ago to start season 2 and it just ended. I'm devastated! I have loved this series so much and I can't believe it just ended like that after 2 seasons. If you enjoy police crime mysteries AND enjoy supernatural TV, movies, and books, you will enjoy this show.

When the series begins it feels a little bit like you walked into a conversation that had been ongoing. Of course all shows must start somewhere, but with this one (to me) I felt at first as though I was missing something. There are eerie crows all over the town, which I interpreted as some type of foreboding of wicked deeds to come. There is a mist in the air seemingly all the time; the location is a cloudy, forested village. You can sense how moody and mysterious it is by the setting, which was really well done.

There are at least eight (8) story arcs going on from the beginning to the end. It begins with a missing person, unresolved relationship issues between the police captain and mayor, a prosecutor from out of town trying to build a case against the mayor and his family, an Antifa type group protesting a local factory and it's impact on the environment, several murders/suspicious deaths, the police captain's complex and mysterious history, and the mystery of the forest itself. These threads all come together by the final episode, but to me there was no neat and tidy conclusion.

You will need to suspend disbelief because this isn't another universe. This is seemingly our world and the inhabitants of this town believe the forest is alive and responsible for much of the violence and weirdness that takes place. At first I kind of rolled my eyes, but the series is really well written, so as things progress it makes perfect sense.

I'm an English speaking American, but the subtitles didn't bother me at all. You will notice that several times throughout the series the language on screen doesn't match the audio, but I'm guessing that's due to the translation between the spoken dialogue in studio when recorded and the original script as written in French.

I loved all of the actors so much! They were brilliant. I hope to find some of their other work because I thought they portrayed their characters brilliantly. I especially loved the prosecutor played by Laurent Capelluto, the mayor, played by Samuel Jouy, and of course, the police captain herself, played by Suliane Brahim. She really carried the entire series.

If you like the genres I mentioned above, do yourself a favor and watch this series. It may feel slow going at first, but trust me, it builds and everything begins to make sense. I love it so much I think I'll start watching again to see if I pick up on anything sooner than during my first watch.
