Dawson's Creek: Rest in Peace (1999)

Andie

As of this point in the series, Andie McPhee is the true hero. She has so many issues and insecurities and yet she is the most human of all of them. One of the things I love about her is that she doesn't have a mean bone in her body. Is it irony that this sweet girl is the one asked to speak at the funeral of the worst witch in Capeside? Time and time again through this season, Andie has taken the high road. It's true that she needs probably the most support of any of the main characters but perhaps that is the truest part of being human. We all thrive best with support from those around us. I also love that Andie makes Pacey so much better as a person. This is one of the high points in the series for Pacey.

And it is one of the low points for Jen. For so much of season 1, Jen stood in the place I now hold Andie. You might think that Jen has been subject to a lot of setbacks that drag her down, but are they more or worse than Andie's? Probably the biggest handicap for Jen has been that she really has struggled to find true acceptance. At least Andie has Pacey. And Jack.

Mary Beth Peil as Grams has had a difficult role. She really does love Jen. Pell has had to walk the line seeming to be judgmental and even bigoted, and these flaws do exist in her, but not nearly as much as she appears and not nearly as much as Jen perceives in her. If Jen could see past those apparent flaws she might be able to keep quiet long enough to find the acceptance she craves in Grams.

Dawson is somehow the one who has repeatedly been a true comfort to those around him and while doing so, give up his selfishness. Yet Dawson also repeatedly becomes selfish and hurts those closest to him. Some of that is because the writers need to keep the seesaw going in his relationships, especially with Joey. Dawson may be one of the most self absorbed and selfish of the main characters, but in this episode he rises above that. I find this inconsistency in his character to be one of the most difficult things in this series to reconcile.

Some people love a good villain. For me Abby's motivation wasn't developed well enough for anything from me except dislike.
