I have been a fan of the last Kingdom since the day it came out. I own all the books, having read them multiple times, and watched the first few series often.
Season 1 was fantastic, genuinely an incredible show. Seasons 2 and 3 were good, and seasons 4 and 5 were ok.
With the film, which actually contains the events of the final three books, it sadly has continued down a disappointing trend.
It's biggest fault is that is just rushed, seriously rushed. Each scene is pivotal to the story, with different key events taking place in a matter of minutes. Because of this, we don't connect with any new characters; in fact we barely get to know them. Before we know it we've reached the climax of the story.
There were aspects I did like, the battle scene was done well, Finan as usual stands out giving us some good moments of humour, but there is little to like unfortunately.
They should have, in my opinion, done one final season. Connected with the characters more, strung out the important events, really build to a satisfying climax.
Worth the watch if you're a fan of the show, but it will leave you feeling a little empty inside. Read the books - you won't regret it.
