Saw a review that says the lead male is gay in real life. Ok, that's interesting and there's so few gay roles to play he has no choice but to accept straight ones. My point is that people are finding all sorts of reasons to explain why "A Merry Christmas Match" is a second-rate film. I feel of my own accord that several aspects are mediocre, but as a whole the entertainment factor was at least average. The main flaw is it's just really slow. Another downside is Newbrough's character is so conceited; but what I've discovered about her acting style is that conceited is her bread and butter. It's not by chance that she is given the role of arrogant hotty in multiple films. In addition, the supporting cast don't have cohesion as real personalities. Later in the story the lead female has a role reversal from conceited to super-fragile without explanation. To add to these confusing character traits, the male best friend's personality is up and down, and the female best friend/celebrity is on and off, even if her musical performances were good.

Much potential is absent with this movie, and that's the director's fault. The romance with the leads is childish, almost like two teens exploring a first crush with the little misunderstandings that are woefully overblown. Her lack of confidence seems unfounded, and her character is underdeveloped. We have no idea why she is so reluctant to take a chance on love. I couldn't find any flaws with his character, so that's a big plus for this film. All the negatives aside, I was touched by the performances of the leads. I feel they did their best, considering the lack of direction and displaced potential.
