For a Sake of Actual Combat - Review of "Flash Point"

Warning: Spoilers
Donnie Yen Ji-Dan and Wilson Yip Wai-Shun collaborated again in a crime and action film "Flash Point" (2007). This time, the collaboration is more masculine than the fateful and gloomy "SPL: Kill Zone" (2005). It's also a more comprehensive display of Donnie Yen's action director. If the audience who likes to watch action scenes, especially those who are interested in actual combat, should be able to meet their needs, which has become the biggest selling point of the film.

In contrast, Wilson Yip's film style, except for some humanistic and innocent and humorous plots, such as villain's three brothers, the demented mother, the quarrel between Wilson, played by Louis Koo Tin-Lok, and Ma, played by Donnie Yen Ji-Dan. It can still be seen, but most of the space is given to Donnie Yen's action scenes for personal play, plus Collin Chou, who has been developing in Hollywood for many years, returns to Hong Kong to play the second brother of villain: Tony, Xing Yu, who had participated in "Kung Fu Hustle" (2004), played the third brother: Tiger. The many fights between Donnie Yen and the two are intense and realistic, especially the street chase between Donnie Yen and Xing Yu and the fight at the roadside "dai pai dong" (open-air food stall). And at the end of a Tian Shui Wai shootout and fighting, Donnie Yen and Collin Chou both exerted their limits as action actors and produced a fierce fight rarely seen in Hong Kong Cinema.

In term of action director, Donnie Yen once again showed his knowledge in mixed martial arts (MMA). In the production special, we can see that he recruited Kenji Tanigaki and Yuji Shimomura from Japan, John Salvitti from the Untied States and Yan Hua from Mainland China. This Donnie Yen team, bring this hybrid combat to a cinematic shot to show off its power. In terms of breakthroughs in action scenes and technology, this film can be said to have reached a certain high level, but in terms of plot, there is nothing new at all, which is quite disappointing for Wilson Yip's fans, but compared to the last time the two collaborated in "Dragon Tiger Gate" (2006), this film is relatively complete. It is only a love affair of Wilson and Judy played by Fan Bingbing, as well as the friendship between Inspector Wong played by Kent Cheng Jak-Si, Ma and Wilson, all of which are very confused and waste the efforts of the actors.
