10/10
you heard it, so you know it

By 1989, the arthouse cinema scene was well established, with John Sayles, Gus Van Sant, Jim Jarmusch and Spike Lee as the primary doyens. A lesser known member of the genre is Hal Hartley. I first learned of him from 1997's "Henry Fool", but his debut was "The Unbelievable Truth".

This movie focuses on the relationship between an ex-con (Robert Burke) and a local woman (Adrienne Shelly) convinced that nuclear annihilation is just around the corner. Their relationship is never idealistic or perfect, and the movie has plenty of rough characters. Basically, this is just about the best example of indie cinema from my childhood, although I only now got around to seeing it. Adrienne Shelly starred in some movies after this one before her tragic murder in 2006.

Anyway, worth seeing. Watch for a young Edie Falco as the waitress.
