The Swimmers (2022)

Last month, I saw a 20 second clip from this film depicting two refugee sisters trying to join a swimming club in Germany with big plans of going to the Olympics. As someone who enjoys sports dramas, specially those about siblings, and as a person who has done quite a bit of competitive swimming I was instantly interested. Yesterday, I finally watched it and now I have to rework my top 10 of the year because this was one special drama full of passion, determination and heart. As I watched I couldn't believe that these events actually happened which elevated the experience even further.

The official synopsis of this movie straight up tells you where this film is going to end up but this is the case where the journey matters more than the destination. Everything begins in Syria in 2011 where two sisters Yusra and Sara are training to be professional swimmers and a few years later because of the ongoing war, they decide to risk it all and try to make it to Germany. We get to see the insurmountably challenging refugee journey full of risks and dangers that takes an incredible amount of strength, courage and motivation.

Like any good inspirational story, this one is not just doom and gloom as there are beautiful glimmers of happiness that will stretch your smile in a grin or will give you an occasional chuckle. It's these moments that round off the story and motivate our heroines by showing that no matter how sorrowful the situation might get, it's important to find some positivity. Despite showing a war and the refugee crisis, there are no politics or sides in this movie; just a story about human spirit and the incredible will to keep going. You will have tears, you will have smiles and most importantly you will have a heart full of optimism for Yusra, Sara and their incredible journey.
