The Blind Ronin
31 December 2022
This was the first of many films that brought to the screen this phenomenon of popularity that is Zatoichi, the blind masseur who is a samurai master. He was created by the Japanese novelist Kan Shimozawa in 1948, as a secondary character, but his potential made him an icon of the myth of the Japanese Ronin, with 26 films released and a television series, in addition to multiple references and inspirations in other works.

This debut film reminded me of Kurosawa's Yojimbo (released the previous year and whose screenplay would be used by Sergio Leone to make A Fistful of Dollars in 1964) and also a cult manga, for those who like these stories of lone vigilantes, which is Kazuo Koike's Lone Wolf and Cub published from 1970 onwards.

Excellent cinematography by Chikashi Makiura in widescreen black and white. A cult film.
