Chef's Table: Musa Dagdeviren (2018)
Season 5, Episode 2
6/10
OK, not great; too much sociopolitical, again
27 December 2022
The Chef here IS interesting and skilled, but this is another episode in which the Producers and/or Director seemed to feel the need to spend a disproportionate amount of valuable time on background sociopolitical issues and history. Yes, it's relevant, but it shouldn't take up the majority of the episode, especially at the expense of what is supposedly the object and theme of the series. This tangent material could have been appropriately conveyed in 4-6 minutes, instead of taking about 2/3rds of the time. When the series revels in creativity, authenticity and even spirituality of what drives these Chefs, it soars. When it becomes didactic, the series loses credibility and attraction. This Chef deserved better, as do the viewers.
