The soap opera is getting the better of the detective fiction

This is an excellent series-or would be if it hadn't turned into a soap opera. I cannot imagine what is in the producers' minds, to ruin the series by introducing every conceivable complication into the characters relationships. This fellow abused his wife and they broke up. That fellow's former wife will lose her house unless her husband does something for the mafia. Meanwhile, he is unaware that his lover is falling in love with another man, and that yet another woman is in love with him. This woman is cheating on her husband with a coworker. This is soap opera, not police procedural, and it's hard to understand why.
