First Love (I) (2022)
8/10
Anthology/Slice of Life Film
23 November 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Hear me out- if you acknowledge it for what it is intended to be- I feel it is extremely well executed. It is set after the 2008 recession, so while the viewer is experiencing the highs and lows of the main character, Jim, falling in love for the first time, they are also getting a glimpse into his parents lives and the struggles and sacrifices many people faced at that time.

Yes- it was super frustrating to see the father jobless for two years, picking fights with his wife, and not helping out around the house- but that is what DEPRESSION is. It's real. It is unfortunately not uncommon, and those characteristics and behaviors are very common in those situations, especially after being the bread winner for a family and then losing that job, identity, and income.

The only thing I will admit I didn't love was the random bits of religion added to the plot. I felt it was unnecessary to the story line or character development. Why show devout Catholics who's son then has premarital sex with zero guilt from being raised in the church? Or maybe not guilt, but some type of connection to this seemingly important faith element in his life having an influence to his intimate relationship. But maybe that's just me.

Overall I felt it was a relaxing, pleasant watch and I quite enjoyed it. I am glad I gave it a shot before I read the reviews.
