Rob McElhenney (Always Sunny) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) have purchased a football (cough soccer) team in Wales, including the club and eventually the racetrack grounds itself where their home games are played. The series follows the purchase and first season of play under the new owners and all the ups and downs that come along the way. Never really a clear vision, while mildly entertaining, I never understood the purpose of this series other than as a means to recoup some costs and get the word out on the team; getting better sponsorship money, and ultimately putting butts in seats. A "documentary" in quotes, simply because I think a true documentary should be independent to the topic being covered, its very clear that this series is essentially 18 episodes of promotional material. At that length it can sometimes feel a bit indulgent, and we never really get see the players or management grow over the course of a season, rather episodes randomly choose a new player or small topic around the team and go moderately in depth about that topic for that episode. Pulling a lot of heartstrings, and significant editing to keep up the excitement and pace, by the end I was rolling my eyes at each mention of Aviation Gin and each new celebrity that came to grace their presence to Wrexham. Obviously setting up for a season 2 (and likely indefinite seasons to come, this is of course an ongoing team), I never believed that this investment was truly coming from the grace of two celebrities trying to reinvigorate a town they had never even been to and focusing on a sport neither of them ever seemed to play or care about, but rather another way to turn Hollywood money into slightly more significant Hollywood money. Wouldn't really recommend unless you're already a huge fan of football or either of these two.
