Wish Me Luck (1987–1990)
7/10
I missed most of this when it was first shown but it is better than I remember

Warning: Spoilers
I was a student 1987-1990 so did not watch much evening tv.

I have always been fascinated by WW2 and the resistance movements so this series was my sort of thing but I never saw it when it was first shown.

I did see a few episodes when it was repeated but I never saw the whole thing before now.

Watching it on dvd.

Any tv drama about this sort of thing must be compared to Manhunt and Secret Army 2 1970s British tv dramas about the european resistance.

Both are unjustly forgotten,Secret Army best known as the inspiration for the brainless comedy of Allo Allo.

Anyway on to Wish Me Luck.

Somebody reviewing the drama on here says it is a typical BBC production but in fact it was an ITV channel LWT who made this.

ITV used to make good big budget dramas of all sorts.

The 3 series are about the British Special Operations Executive a covert operations unit who blew stuff up and spied on German occupied europe.

They supplied the anti fascist resistance all over europe.

SOE used women as agents a fact that is endlessly debated in the series.

The series is sometimes a bit of a feminist lecture but I suppose the point of view makes up for the fact that the role of women in WW2 is still not well enough known.

As a complete WW2 history geek I can't see many errors in the series.

Some of the acting is a bit shaky but perhaps this was due to the scripts?

What really struck me was that it was sunny in every episode and the women had great hair, everything looked so nice it was hard to remember how awful the German occupation was for the French.

It does look very 1980s.

I like Wish Me Luck more now that I have seen the first 2 series but it is nowhere near as worth watching as Manhunt or Secret Army.
