Review of Truman

Truman (2015)
7/10
A rare thing
23 October 2022
Pessimism is a remarkable characteristic of Romanticism , especially with a certain taste for the lugubrious. Death and related themes, such as depression, madness, loneliness, disenchantment, melancholy, night, euthanasia, suicide, etc. 'Truman' qualifies as this rare thing - a romantic movie - even containing a sex scene (incredibly and paradoxically not gratuitous). Love is present in different ways: love for the dog, for the friend, for the child, in the streets of Las Salesas.

The existential approach is the opposite of thagt of, e.g. Another Spanish film, 'Mar Adentro'; but somewhat similar to 'Okuribito' - in short, a thin but moving plot, full of feelings that threaten to provoke the spectator's distrust, but never gets to that point. And a posthumous note: the performer of the title role (Troilo, his real name, was also the name of an Argentine tango maestro) died shortly after filming.
