Another slasher and slayer of wanton and wayward teens slice their way onto our screens in Fatal Games. This time the killer has a particular strategy and sanctification for the slayings. And it's all centred around the world of athletics.

Competitions are mentally and physically demanding, and when you're trying to make the cut for the Olympics, that strain is magnified to infinity and beyond. However, the writers miss every opportunity to display this side of competing in athletic tournaments. Instead, they keep the terminator's tale simple, and it's a shame because one of the killer's reasons is that pressure and burden as it's the breaking point for them. But hey, what are teenagers if they're not sexy, selfish, and big meat sacks of hormonal fun(?) Though they ignored that element, the writers slide into an ethical dilemma - drug use in sports. And, surprisingly, this isn't too terrible a side story - but it fizzles out before we get to the finale. There was so much the writers could have done to make this dark thriller more thrilling. So, the writers leave us with the basic mysterious figure offing the team one-by-one, for what appears to be no reason, and in sports-type style. The javelin emerges as the killer's weapon of choice - at least it wasn't the gymnastic ribbons. The saddest thing is the stereotypical teens. It would've been amazing had the writers given them more meaning and drive; the chances were there - bad writers.

It may say a lot about the movie when you learn one of the co-writers directed the picture. Could the genuine reason for having a college sports team setting be for the shower and changing room scenes along with the nubile young women wearing leotards and swimsuits? I wouldn't hazard a guess, but it certainly feels that way. Michael Elliot, for the most part, delivers the viewers a sub-standard film. His cinematography is run-of-the-mill, and the flow is too slow. However, there are a few scenes where he attempts to provide more intrigue and fervour, but they are few and far between.

The cast is a broad mix of good and bad performers. Sadly there are more inexperienced portrayals than there are skilled renditions of characters. And even the best of the bunch still has moments of malodourous melodramatics.

If you're a Slasher sycophant, Fatal Games should be up your race track. Otherwise, it's another of those movies to watch if there's nothing else on or you've nothing better to do - like poking yourself in the eye with a dull fork.

I have a javelin, and I'm not afraid to use it. So before you get speared, scan my IMDb list - Killer Thriller Chillers to see where I ranked Fatal Games.

Take Care & Stay Well.
