This is an intelligent, well-crafted debut feature film by a new independent filmmaker. The story is interesting, the characters are compelling and well developed, the relationship between the two leads is complex and believable, the cinematography is stunning, and the music is pitch perfect. There are many subtle and clever touches beginning with the first two seconds of the film where the shot of a microscope slide starts out fuzzy and is brought into focus, perhaps a metaphor for the process of self-discovery the lead actress makes during the film. Or the contrast between the brightly colored but confined climbing gym with the expansive but rather drab colors of the actual rock outcroppings. The director shows great confidence, having long stretches without dialogue to emphasize the quiet and isolation of the desert setting. If you want a bombastic, fast-paced film with sex, violence, and special effects, this is not for you. But if you want a thought-provoking, well-acted and beautifully shot film, don't miss this.
