Detective film with a unique tone

Burt Lancaster plays a retired policeman who comes out of prison, who to earn a living takes the job of night watchman in the night shift of a college, introduced by a cop friend who also converted. He takes his job very seriously, as well as his visits to his probation officer, Susan Clark, who is not indifferent to him, and vice versa. But a murder occurs on campus and he finds himself leading his own investigation. The story brings together local politicians, the local police who are also investigating and who don't want this retired cop, his colleagues, and the young students, hippies or not, and his probation officer who will get involved in all this.

The film contains few action sequences and builds its narrative on multiple characters. The detective film with a very seventies tone works perfectly well: good script that mixes all its characters who turn out not to be the ones we imagine, literally, where only Burt Lancaster turns out to be a positive and reliable character. All the others turn out to have a double game, calculating and having another agenda than what we are shown.

The film remains interesting and has its own tone despite its forty-five years.
