Review of Hatching

Hatching (2022)
7/10
Weird, creepy and pretty awesome

Warning: Spoilers
This is a well-made movie all around. I was invested throughout. It's not so much scary as it is creepy and psychological. And it's filled with metaphors, which doesn't always work for me but definitely does here. I recommend this movie to anyone who likes this subgenre of horror. (1 viewing, 5/4/2022)

SPOILERS

At first I was going to give this 6 stars because I was disappointed in the ending. The movie made me hate most of the characters surrounding Tinja, and I REALLY wanted the creature to kill them in gruesome ways, especially the worst mother ever. I thought that's what it was leading to. But I don't like telling a movie what it should do. I like consuming what the artist gives me.

I also didn't fully understand what they were going for with the final shot of the creature becoming the new Tinja, but it finally clicked when I got home (at least I think). The way I interpret it is, this is the new, damaged version of Tinja, caused by the physical and psychological damage inflicted on her by her mother. She is a different, more hollow version of the person she could have naturally become if she grew up in a more supportive household. I like that.
