Review of Black Lake

Black Lake (2016–2018)
3/10
Season One poor, Season Two pathetic

At least there seemed to be some internal logic to the supernatural happenings in Season One. The prequel, Season Two, could just as easily been a murder and kidnapping mystery without the spells and the visions. It would have been far better played straight.

There were certainly some creepy scenes in Season One. But Season Two was not really frightening at all as far as the spirit world was concerned. I also had enormous difficulties in believing is the whole set up on the island and the therapy fortnights. That an unqualified couple of people would have been handed public money to run these courses didn't ring true and that courts would be sending offenders there was just not plausible.

I had difficulty believing in the island itself. There are two large mansions shown but supposedly no one living on the island apart from an elderly woman and in the summer, the therapists and the trainees. There would have been dozens of cottages of workers who served the rich scattered around but we are led to believe that the only other buildings were a lighthouse and the old woman's place. Those cottages would have been snapped up and renovated by the middle classes in an instant on such a desirable location. The visitors are told that they have to be careful of water usage as it's hard to come by. Half an hour later we see them hiking next to a huge set of waterfalls and a substantial stream. The programmes were simply not consistent.

I watched both seasons to the end. The prequel's denouement was sublimely ridiculous both in the revelations of what had been going on and the physical world where stabbings either had little effect or too much effect.

This series wasn't really scary. I wish that they had simply made this as a murder thriller. I can't recommend any of it in the slightest.
