Intense and interesting semi-autobiographic Samuel Fuller film about an account of the US Army's First Infantry Division
19 March 2022
Engaging chronicle about the US Army's famous First Infantry Divion in WWII , the Big Red One . It is commanded by platton leader Lee Marvin , a relic from WWI, haunted by memories, who leads a team of wetnoses , Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine . Bobby DiCicco , Kelly Ward into the dangers of battle . Led by the grizzled Marvin , cut a fiery path of conquest from the landing in North África, Sicily , Belgium to the liberation of the concentration camp at Falkenau , Czechoslovakia and Germany itself . The real glory of war is surviving. Only Chance could have thrown them together. Now, nothing can pull them apart .

This release gave Lee Marvin his best character in years and his most restrained acting , as he is really magnificent . Based on writer/director Samuel Fuller's personal records of WWII .This is one of the best American movies about WWII and in places , very moving too. In part a tale of lost innocence , the movie scores highest by bringing the raw horror of war down to the individual level. Lee Marvin is well accompanied by a motley group of roles playing compellingly the rifle squad composed by four very young men, such as Mark Hamill, Robert Carradine , Bobby DiCicco, Kelly Ward, and they are all good. And brief appearances from Stephane Audran, Maurice Marsac, Perry Lang, Siegfried Rauch, Serge Marquand, Guy Marchand and Samuel Fuller cameo as a war correspondent.

This terrific movie was competently directed by Samuel Fuller , being tactfully handled and quite memorable done. This great filmmaker Fuller remained inactive for nearly a decade, and came up with, , despite its Eighties blood and gore , a picture that is curiously old-fashioned. The cigar-chewing Fuller made several classic movies , such as : The naked Kiss, Pick up on South Street , Underworld USA, Shock Corridor, Hell and high water, Fixed bayonets, While Dog, Merrill Marauders and Big Red one. Rating 7/10. .Better than average. Well worth watching. The flick will appeal to Lee Marvin fans and Samuel Fuller followers .
